HISTORY

Built as the Alexander Building in 1921 by the estate of railroad magnet and member of the legendary Big Four, Charles Crocker, the building was one of the first “skyscrapers” to grace the San Francisco skyline and was named for Crocker’s daughter, Harriett Crocker Alexander. The Crocker Estate Company commissioned famed architect Lewis Parsons Hobart, whose other noteworthy landmarks include Grace Cathedral and the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. One of the most celebrated architects of his time, Hobart was renowned for his mastery of the gothic style. He was applauded by the press for the Alexander Building’s graceful composition, and elegant details which include arched openings, terracotta adornments, signature quatrefoil medallions and ornamental ironwork.
